To be able to skate on a lake, you need black ice. This only forms under certain weather conditions. On the one hand, low temperatures are required for the lake to freeze over, and on the other hand, there must be no precipitation (snow, rain) during the freezing process so that a smooth surface can form.
The Oeschinensee freezes over every winter, but not with black ice. This natural spectacle only happens every few years. However, as soon as the ice is thick enough, pedestrians can enjoy the lake on the prepared ice walk and ice fishermen can fish.
